Simple Biblical Guidelines for Clothing

What does my clothing make others think about me?

I already realize before you got to this first sentence, many of you will say "It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks...that's their problem."

Is that a Godly, Christian, answer?  Of course it isn't.  Read Proverbs 7:10:

Proverbs 7:10 "And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart."

The scripture speaks of the "attire" of a harlot.  Why do you suppose this is?  Let's say you are in dire need of a Policeman.  There you are running down the road and suddenly, on the opposite corner, you see a policeman.  Running up to him, you begin begging for help only to hear him burst out in laughter.  He tries to explain, "I'm not really a policeman, I just dress this way".  Where does it leave you?  You looked at him, you understood him to be a policeman, yet you found that he was truly not a policeman".  Now, you're in quite a predicament aren't you?

Friends, you are known by the company you keep and unfortunately, many young ladies (and older ones too) are known by the clothes they wear.  If you wear the attire of a harlot, guess what ALL men consider you to be?  .... Exactly....   Men simply don't have a problem seeing you that way and it has nothing to do with what your heart is like.

As a TRUE Christian, called to holiness, how should you dress?

What kind of people dress that way?

It's very simple to answer.  I know that many of you watch your favorite television shows and you can instantly recognize a "hooker" when you see one.  Why then, would ANY Christian want to dress that way?  Men, don't think you're off the hook either.

We've all see the cop shows that have undercover agents on them (many times it is drug related).  How are they dressed, nice?  Business like?  Clean cut?  Not hardly.  Most of them are dressed with long hair, facial hair that is unkempt (I'm not against facial hair at all mind you), raggedy clothes, etc.  Is this the image you think a true Christian should portray?

What kind of people dress the same way you do?  Are you sure you want to be identified with them?  What kind of Testimony will you have when you stand before a Holy Righteous Judge:  Jesus Christ?

The argument is often made that the "world" dresses far worse than church people.  It is the worldly ones that love to use the "outward appearance" argument.   Consider the instruction of the Word of God:

1 Corinthians 2:5  "That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God."

I ask this:  "Who cares what the world says?"  I for one, do not since I don't have to answer to "the world".  I care only what the Lord has to say.  Don't take the thinking of the world to try to win your argument about clothing.  That type of thinking is not of God.  To use the Apostle James' insight:

James 3:15 "This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish."

1 Corinthians 1:20  "Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?"

When you resort to the world's thinking on ANY issue (whether it is political, personal, or spiritual), you, my friend, are in great trouble and you need to rethink (if not re-pent) your relationship with the Lord Jesus.

I'll ask one final question before closing.
